# Connect Claude to the eGain MCP

Use this guide to connect Claude (Claude for Desktop, Claude App for iOS, and Claude for Android) to your eGain MCP server.

## Prerequisites

- An **eGain Knowledge tenant**. If you do not have one, sign up for a free trial of **AI Knowledge Hub** or **AI Developer** on [eGain.com](https://www.egain.com/), or ask your eGain administrator to create an account for you in your team's existing tenant.
- **Administration Console access** for the partition you want Claude to read from (needed to enable Remote MCP).
- A **Claude account** with permission to add custom connectors. MCP access mirrors your eGain user's permissions — Claude can only access the portals and articles that your eGain user account can access.

## Step 1: Enable Remote MCP in your eGain tenant

1. Sign in to your eGain Administration Console. Your tenant URL follows the pattern `https://<your-eGain-hostname>/<your-tenant-id>` — for example, `https://ai.egain.cloud/a1b2` or `https://aidev.egain.cloud/a1b2`.
2. Go to **Partition** → **Integration** → **MCP**.
3. Turn on the **Enable Remote MCP** toggle.
4. Select one of the available tabs for your use case:
  * **Agent:** for agent-only MCP access.
  * **Authenticated Customer:** for authenticated customer access.
  * **Anonymous Customer:** for anonymous customer access.
5. Click the copy icon next to the **MCP Server URL** field to copy the URL You will paste this into Claude in the next step.

## Step 2: Add the eGain MCP to Claude

### Claude Desktop and Claude.ai (browser)

The flow is the same in Claude Desktop and on [claude.ai](https://claude.ai) in a browser:

1. Open Claude and go to **Customize** → **Connectors**.
2. Click the **Add connector** ![](/assets/buton_add_connector.5aa588c49a7d9a0a6f2cb5acfdc756bb95905d6d4e84cc7edf432124ff40e854.afe294b5.png) button, then select **Add custom connector**.

3. Enter a **Name** (for example, `eGain`) and paste the **MCP Server URL** you copied from your Administration Console into the **Remote URL** field.
4. Click **Add**.
  * If you used an authenticated MCP URL, Claude will prompt you to sign in.
  * If you used an anonymous MCP URL, the connector completes setup without requiring sign-in.

Once added, you can enable or disable the eGain Remote MCP connector at any time by clicking ![](/assets/buton_add_connector.5aa588c49a7d9a0a6f2cb5acfdc756bb95905d6d4e84cc7edf432124ff40e854.afe294b5.png) in the chat input and selecting **Connectors**.

### Claude for iOS and Android

Add the connector once in Claude for Desktop or on claude.ai. The mobile apps pick up the connector automatically because it is tied to your Claude account — there is no separate **Add custom connector** option on mobile.

## Step 3: Test the connection

Open a new chat in Claude and ask something like:

> *"What does our master knowledge base say about refunds?"*

## Authentication & Permissions

- **Authentication:** Claude authenticates using OAuth 2.0 with your eGain account. Claude never sees your password.
- **Visibility:** Claude can only see the portals and articles your eGain user is allowed to see.
- **Revoking access**: Revoke access at any time from Claude's Connectors page or your eGain account settings..
- **Anonymous access:** if your portal allows it, you can skip sign-in entirely. Claude will see only what unauthenticated visitors see on your portal.

## Troubleshooting

- **Connector stays "Pending" after sign-in.** Refresh the Connectors page. If the issue persists, disconnect and reconnect.
- **"No portals found".** Confirm that the eGain account you signed in with has access to at least one portal.
- **Changed eGain tenants.** Disconnect and reconnect using the new tenant's MCP Server URL.
- **Sign-in loop in the browser.** This is usually a third-party cookie issue — try a private window or a different browser.
